Lewes is considered the First Town in the First State. Its attractive historic downtown is charmingly easy to walk around to discover the many elegant shops, restaurants and museums it has to offer. There are also some fairly exclusive hotels including Dogfish Inn, a 16 room hotel owned by Dogfish Head Brewery. Cape Henlopen State Park has miles of beautiful beaches, nature trails and bird sanctuaries, along with a historic World War II Observation Tower, with 360-degree views of the coastline, and a former military bunker which looks out onto the breathtaking Atlantic coastline.
The Cape May Lewes Ferry is a great experience for young and old alike, taking around 85 minutes to cross the 17 miles of the Delaware Bay. By car or by foot, you can take it as a day trip to Cape May, or use it as part of your onward journey. Either way, it's a great way to spend a day, all year round.

Within the boundaries of Cape Henlopen State Park lies Fort Miles Historical Area, a step back in time to when the area was a key piece in the nation's coastal defense. The area is now part of the National Register of Historic Places and boasts the original battery, massive 12 and 16 inch guns and minefields, and a former military bunker and historic World War II Observation Towers, with 360-degree views of the coastline.
There are many bike trails in and around Lewes. If you are up for a 5 mile cycle, try the Junction and Breakwater Trail, the path which follows the old Penn Central Railroad line between Rehoboth and Lewes and starts behind the Tanger Outlets on Route 1. The trail winds its way through woods, fields and some residential areas, to the center of Lewes. It is shaded in parts, and suitable for bikers, hikers, and strollers of all abilities, although there is some parts where it is necessary to cycle on the road.
